HP XG978UA#ABA Review by John R. King "quad" (Rock Falls, IL. USA)

Was working fine the first month, then it started to update very day, would not wok after updates. Would have to go to restore date back when first went into service. would work till you restarted. then it would update at start up and would not run. I lost all my files, pictures and programs I had installed.
Went back to using my five year old laptop, it works much better.

HP Envy has been big disappointment.

June 6,2011
Still can not get this computer to start, almost every time you turn it on, it only shows blue scree saying do not turn
off updating, never completes could run like that for hours.
Shut off try next day works fine for awhile then will go to updating and you are through.
can not get it repaired and it is only a few months old. Has never worked correctly.
I wasted a lot of money on bad equipment that is not backed up.

HP XG978UA#ABA Review by LeibnizNotation (Wisconsin, USA)

The HP Envy 14 1110nr is a beautiful, very well-built and high-performing machine with a few minor flaws and for me one major issue (lack of VGA output) that made it unsuitable to my business needs.

PROS
+Fast, high-performing computing with i5 processor, 2.53 GHZ and 7200 rpm 640 gig hard drive
+Switchable graphics processing unit with ATI Radeon processor for demanding video, gaming, etc.
+excellent display with glass screen (even at 1368 x 1024, it looks great)
+beautiful overall machine - a style statement that is not over the top
+all-metal, laser-etched casing looks good and allows cooling
+excellent build quality
+stable keyboard
+built-in bluetooth and backlit keyboard

CONS (in order of importance for me)
-Limited port capabilities including lack of a VGA output require purchase of costly, bulky adapter for presentations
-Touchpad/clickpad is weaker than the rest of the machine - slightly erratic at times, but not the worst.
-keyboard design a bit off: chiclet style keys are not well marked and slightly small; without a tactile reference point, it was difficult to find my bearings to touch-type.
-Minor fan noise is constant- bothers some, not me.
-Battery lifetime is not great just OK (2.5-3 hrs).
-Glass screen effect of otherwise beautiful display is a potentially distracting reflection if you are sitting with your back to a bright window.

TOSS-UP
*at 5.3 lbs with an optical drive, it is loaded but not light.
*weak speakers; Beats Audio was a meaningless feature to me.
*HP service was responsive but slow to realize the solution to my issue.

Overall, I returned the HP Envy with regret since it fell short of my work needs even though I really liked it. I found the Envy 14 superior in performance, design and build to the Asus bamboo U43 and the Dell XPS 15 that I also road-tested.

For me, the lack of a VGA output was a deal breaker -- but not necessarily for you. Apart from that, and a middling touchpad, I found it offered high quality and performance. For my needs, a $925 machine must have a built-in ability to connect to an external projector or monitor, not requiring purchase and lugging around of a costly, bulky external adapter, as the HP Envy does. As a college professor, I make regular slideshow presentations in classrooms and conference rooms without the latest technology. Note: digital-to-analog conversion requires an adapter card device; an HDMI-VGA cable alone will not work, which I learned the hard way.

If you will be using the Envy 14 for entertainment purposes exclusively primarily, a gamer, and/or connecting to the latest monitors and HDTVs, you will probably be fine with the HDMI, USB and mini-display ports on the machine.

HP XG978UA#ABA Review by John Boese (the glen burnie project)

I purchased my HP Envy 14 in December 2010, and as of this writing (August 2011) can safely say it's the worst computer I've purchased in my 15 years as a computer consumer.

The ATI Radeon 5650 graphics adapter has given me endless fits since almost day one, the HP Beats Audio System is buggy (depending on headphone configuration, music or web video play out of the computer while mp3s play out of headphones, and these settings can't be changed). I've also had to call HP support a few times due to serious freeze/crash issues. I bought an external hard drive to back up my important documents about six months ago, and am basically waiting for this computer to die so I can get another one. I don't expect that to take much longer.

Avoid at all costs.
