The gloves do allow flipping up the index finger and thumb tips of the gloves - left and right - for using a smart phone or other touch screen device.
The fabric is reasonably warm, but stiff. For me, the glove fingers are a bit too long, making using my phone a little awkward.
I have LLBean mitten/gloves with flip up mitten parts which exposes all the finger tips - but not the thumbs.
I do not know if there is a better solution than these gloves. I wish there were.

These gloves really met expections! I bought them as a gift for my daughter and she loves them. They fit great and the finger slips out easily.
